A 37-year-old woman in Chennai was duped of ₹70 lakh by an imposter posing as an MBBS-qualified cosmetology expert, who claimed to run a successful skin and hair clinic chain. The accused—a woman who purportedly held a medical degree from the Philippines—promised franchise opportunities, showing videos and certificates to support her claims, including images of clinics in Hyderabad, Tirupati, Dubai, and the Philippines.
The victim was introduced to the accused in July 2024 at “London Beautorium,” a skin and hair clinic in Anna Nagar. The imposter offered injectable aesthetic treatments and further encouraged the victim to invest in a franchise, even offering to provide an MBBS certificate to help secure licensing. Trusting her supposed credentials, the victim transferred ₹70 lakh only to discover later that the documents were fake and that unqualified individuals were administering medical procedures.
Despite filing complaints with the Tamil Nadu Medical Council, the Directorate of Medical Services, and the Central Crime Branch, police initially treated the matter as civil rather than criminal. After six months, the victim sought intervention from an Egmore magistrate, who on July 3, 2025, directed the registration of a First Information Report and asked the Central Crime Branch to investigate. Another individual has since come forward with a similar complaint. The scam is now under active investigation, and authorities are examining charges including impersonation, forgery, and violations of medical safety regulations.
