Doctors at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai have brought hope to hundreds of hearing-impaired children by performing cochlear implant surgeries. Over the past nine years, 238 children with severe hearing loss have received the surgery through the hospital’s cochlear implant programme. This initiative has helped children who were unable to hear or speak to begin developing speech and language skills.

The hospital provides the surgery under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS), making it free for eligible children from low-income families. Children aged between 1 and 5 years are considered for the surgery, and after the operation, they receive continuous speech therapy at the GRH speech centre. According to doctors, early surgery followed by therapy plays a key role in helping the child learn to hear and talk normally.

GRH doctors said the treatment does not stop after surgery. Regular follow-ups, support from parents, and speech therapy are essential for the child’s progress. Many children who received implants have now joined regular schools and are doing well. The success of this programme highlights the importance of early medical intervention and accessible healthcare for children with hearing disabilities.
