The Orissa High Court has imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on Dr. Antaryami Mishra, a physician, for falsely claiming the Padma Shri award. Dr. Mishra alleged that his namesake, a journalist, had impersonated him to receive the 2023 Padma Shri for literature and education. He filed a petition asserting that he had authored 29 books and was the rightful recipient. However, the court found his claims unsubstantiated and dismissed the petition, directing the fine to be paid to the High Court Bar Association fund. 

The controversy arose when both individuals named Antaryami Mishra claimed entitlement to the same Padma Shri award. The journalist had already received the honor from the President of India. In response, Dr. Mishra approached the court, asserting that the award was meant for him due to his literary contributions. The court, however, noted that despite rigorous verification processes, such confusion occurred due to identical names, raising concerns about the award's selection credibility.

Justice Sanjeeb Kumar Panigrahi, presiding over the case, expressed surprise at the mix-up and emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of national honors. The court's decision to penalize Dr. Mishra serves as a reminder of the need for accurate representation and the consequences of misleading claims. This incident underscores the necessity for thorough verification in the conferment of prestigious awards to prevent similar disputes in the future.
