Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi have successfully treated a retired schoolteacher's severe hand tremors using a cutting-edge, non-invasive procedure called MRI-Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) Thalamotomy. This advanced technique utilizes focused ultrasound beams, guided by MRI, to target and treat specific brain regions responsible for tremors. Unlike traditional surgeries, MRgFUS does not require any incisions or implanted devices, resulting in fewer complications and a quicker recovery time.

 

The patient had been struggling with uncontrollable hand tremors for years, which affected her ability to perform everyday tasks like eating, drinking, and writing. Previous treatments, including consultations with various specialists, had not provided relief. The prospect of undergoing deep brain stimulation surgery, which involves implanting a device in the brain, caused her significant anxiety. Upon learning about MRgFUS Thalamotomy, she consulted Dr. Anshu Rohatgi, vice-chairman of the neurology department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, who recommended the procedure.

 

Following the treatment, the patient experienced immediate improvement. The tremors in her right hand ceased during the procedure itself. The next day, she was able to drink without spilling, eat independently, and write steadily—tasks that had been challenging before. Dr. Ajay Swaroop, chairman of the hospital's board of management, highlighted that this marks the introduction of North India's first non-invasive treatment for severe movement disorders, offering new hope to patients with conditions like Essential Tremors and Tremor-Dominant Parkinson's Disease.
