In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur successfully removed a 210-centimetre-long hairball from the stomach of a 14-year-old girl from Agra. This hairball, known as a trichobezoar, is believed to be the longest ever recorded, surpassing the previous record of 180 cm. The girl had been experiencing abdominal pain and vomiting for over a month before seeking medical attention. Upon examination, doctors discovered a hard mass stretching from her stomach to her upper abdomen. A CT scan revealed that her stomach was distended and filled with an abnormal object. During surgery, it was found that the hairball extended from her stomach into the distal ileum, a part of the small intestine. The surgical team, led by Dr. Jeevan Kankariya, managed to remove the entire hairball in one piece, avoiding the need for multiple incisions.
The girl was diagnosed with Rapunzel Syndrome, a rare condition where individuals compulsively eat their own hair, leading to the formation of hairballs in the digestive tract. This condition is often associated with psychological disorders such as trichophagia and trichotillomania. The successful removal of the hairball not only alleviated the girl's physical symptoms but also highlighted the importance of addressing underlying psychological issues. The medical team emphasized the need for awareness and early intervention in such cases to prevent severe complications. The girl is now recovering well and is expected to make a full recovery.
